Chapter II—On the Road to Trouble
The Overlanders prepare for defense. Stacy’s weapona tent stake. Emma Dean in the toils. The shotthat stopped the roper. “Let ’em have it!” yells theguide. All because of the fat boy’s dream. Thealarm.
Chapter III—An Invitation to Move
“Sit tight!” orders Hippy. A caller who threatenedtrouble. Sam Conifer passes the lie. “I reckon I’dkill ye whar ye stand!” Hands flash to weapons.The stranger is ordered out of camp. When brainswere mixed.
Chapter IV—At the “Circle O” Ranch
Camp made in the foothills of the Cosos. “The OldMan wants ter know what ye are doin’ heah!” TheOverlanders are again ordered to get out. Emmaexplains the “imponderable something.” The dancein the bunk-house. A bullet parts Sam Conifer’swhiskers.
