The present Edition of the “History of the War inAfghanistan” is a reproduction of the three-volumedEdition of 1857, which was thoroughly revised, and muchimproved by the kindly aid of many of the chief actorsin the scenes described. I do not think that I can makeit any better.
Only one alleged error has been brought to my noticesince the last Edition was published. It is stated, inChapter IV., page 55, that “Mr. Harford Jones, a civilservant of the Company, who was made a Baronet for theoccasion, was deputed to Teheran to negotiate with theMinisters of the Shah.” This was first published in 1851.After a lapse of twenty-three years, I have recently beeninformed by the son of Sir Harford Jones, that his fatherwas not made a Baronet in consideration of prospectivebut of past services.
