A CRIMINAL IN DISGUISE.

After no small amount of deliberation, I have cometo the conclusion that it is only fit and proper I shouldset myself right with the world in the matter of thenow famous 18--swindles. For, though I have neverbeen openly accused of complicity in those miserableaffairs, yet I cannot rid myself of the remembrancethat it was I who introduced the man who perpetratedthem to London society, and that in more than oneinstance I acted, innocently enough, Heaven knows,as his Deus ex machinâ, in bringing about the veryresults he was so anxious to achieve. I will firstallude, in a few words, to the year in which thecrimes took place,
