The celebration of the Centennial Anniversary ofthe United States at the city of Philadelphia in 1876,and the exhibit there made of that nation’s wonderfulgrowth and progress, gave a new and remarkableimpulse to the germs of patriotism in American life. The following tales of the American Revolution—withthe exception of the last—were written twenty-twoyears ago, and are the outcome of an interestthen awakened. They all appeared in magazinesand other publications of that period, from whichthey have been gathered into this volume, in thehope that thereby patriotism may grow stronger inthe children of to-day.
