verybody, not to sayevery householder, isalive to the acutedangers of escapinggas. Every otherthought was suspendedfor the moment.The halldoor was left open,watched over by littleHugh, and everybody,even the stranger,Mrs. Grant,rushed to open somewindow. The nextthing was to find outthe peccant burner.

Clementina called from the kitchenthat the gas there was properly turnedoff, save one light still burning. It wasthe same in hall and dining-room;what was not alight was duly turned off.Miss Latimer, coming downstairs at themoment, reported that there was noodour of escaping gas in the higherregions.

“Well, there’s only my bedroom left,”said Tom, “and I’m certain I turned offmine.”
