It is the policy of railroads to employ firemenwho will in time become competent locomotiveengineers. This requires that a man should have atleast a common school education, good habits andbe in good physical condition. He should be alert,with good reasoning faculties and a man of soundjudgment. Having these qualifications, advancementwill come to those who are conscientious in dischargingtheir duties and who devote some of their leisurehours to study.
As an aid to this end, and that the railroad companiesmay derive the highest efficiency from theman employed as a locomotive engineman, a codeof questions is given him, and it is expected thatthe preparation necessary to correctly answer thequestions will indicate how well he has progressed.
The list of questions is also intended as a guideto the matters on which he should be correctlyinformed, both during his term of service as afireman and
