PREFACE

Created complete, equipped for sporadicmultiplication and later for auto-fertilization, therestless sex, intensely bored by the process ofprocreation, presently invented an auxiliary andlabeled him [male symbol].

A fool proceeding, for the inherited mania forinvention obsessed him and he began to invent gods. Theonly kind of gods that his imagination could conceivewere various varieties of supermen, stronger, morecruel, craftier than he. And with these he continuedto derive satisfaction by scaring himself.

But the restless sex remained restless; the inventionof the sign of Mars ([Mars symbol]), far from bringingcontent, merely increased the capacity of the sex forfidgeting. And its insatiate curiosity concerning its ownhandiwork increased.

This handiwork, however, fulfilled rather casually thepurpose of its inventor, and devoted the most of itstime to the invention of gods, endowing the mostpowerful of them with all its own cowardice, vanity,intolerance and ferocity.
