INTRODUCTION.

The favour with which my former Indian tales havebeen received has induced me to write another, inillustration of one of the most important epochs inthe history of the Dekhan. The character of the nobleQueen Chand Beebee is still popular in the country;and her memory is reverenced, not only as the preserverof Beejapoor, but for the heroic resistance she made tothe Moghul armies in their first invasion of the Dekhanand siege of Ahmednugger. The whole circumstancesrelating to the Queen, upon which this tale has beenfounded, are detailed in the history of Mahomed KasimFerishta, and can be read and verified in the translationof that work by the late Major-General Briggs.
