Capt. Jeffrey Hazard.
On the 27th of June, 1891, a meeting of thesurviving members of Battery H was calledin the City of Providence, R. I., and the writerwas appointed historian, and authorized and empoweredto prepare a history of the battery.
Fully realizing the magnitude of such an undertaking, and making no pretense of special fitnessfor the task imposed upon him, yet he enteredupon the work with a determination to make afaithful record of every event connected with theBattery so far as he was able to do with the materialsat hand. From daily memoranda kept duringthe entire service of the Battery in the War forthe Union, and from consultation with reliableworks relating to the Rebellion, this history hasbeen prepared, and to their aid the writer isgreatly indebted for the accuracy of the work.
He fully appreciates the kindly services renderedby Adjutant-General Elisha Dyer and his assistants, and valuable material furnished by CaptainviHazard, Sergeant Cheever, Corporal Paul and otherswhose names are not mentioned here, and towhom he is under many obligations.
Trusting that this work will be appreciated bythose who take an interest in the great strugglethrough which we passed for national existence,I shall feel amply repaid if it merits the approbationof the patriotic citizens of our State andcountry.
