PREFATORY NOTE FOR THE EDITIONOF 1905
In this New Edition of a book which is supposed to haveplayed some little part in increasing the taste for PrintCollecting here in England, the few alterations I havemade, in the text, are chiefly verbal ones. I did not wantto interfere, more than was absolutely needful, with a pieceof writing that, done at one time, possessed, probably, along with all its faults and its deficiencies, some unity.
But it seemed good that certain additions, hardlyoutside the lines on which the book had been planned—andwhich the passing of years, more than anything else, had suggested—should be made, and grouped together ina short, separate Chapter—“Postscript: 1905.” That hasbeen accomplished. And this “Postscript” deals verybriefly with a few artists, new or not noticed before—dealstoo with certain changes in money value, as towhich no indication can be more than approximate.
It has been necessary to extend, to a small extent, theBibliography.
And it has been convenient to suppress certain of theIllustrations that appeared in the Original Edition, and tosupply others in the place of them.
