THE felicity of F. Opper’s caricatures is marvelous.His drawings for the Dinkelspielstories, by George V. Hobart, in the NewYork “Morning Journal” have drawn to himthe pleased attention of those whom he has caused tolaugh at the happy expressions of his characters,—atthe ridiculous expressions of the characters,—duringMr. Dinkelspiel’s “gonversationings,” particularly atMr. Dinkelspiel’s earnest look.
He is a caricaturist of the “first water,” and in thisconnection I may say that a caricature too carefullydrawn often loses its humor. Still Mr. Opper hasproved his ability to finish a drawing smoothly. Thosefamiliar with the back numbers of “Puck” will concedethis and much more.
His life is an example of determination. I called, byappointment, at his house in Bensonhurst (near BathBeach), a pretty suburb within the precincts of GreaterNew York. We stepped into his library.
