The work, inits present abbreviated form, still presents a continuous and completerecord of American history during the period of Washington's officiallife. Mr. Irving's language, as a rule, has been retained; but incases where a variation from his sentences has been necessary, inorder to secure the requisite brevity, the paragraphs are enclosed inbrackets.
