In condensing into one compact volume Mr. Irving's elaborate Life ofWashington, care has been taken to retain, not only all the importantfacts connected with Washington's career, but also those circumstancesand incidents which may be supposed to contribute to a full estimateof his character in all its aspects. Nor have any portion of the greatevents connected with the era in which he filled so grand andcontrolling a part been unduly neglected or subordinated. The work, inits present abbreviated form, still presents a continuous and completerecord of American history during the period of Washington's officiallife. Mr. Irving's language, as a rule, has been retained; but incases where a variation from his sentences has been necessary, inorder to secure the requisite brevity, the paragraphs are enclosed inbrackets.
