FOREWORD

This little book, whose design is to lead thedevout Bible-student into the Green Pasturesof the Good Shepherd, thence to the BanquetingHouse of the King, and thence to the serviceof the Vineyard, is one of the abiding legaciesof Mr. Hudson Taylor to the Church. In thepower of an evident unction from the HolyOne, he has been enabled herein to unfold insimplest language the deep truth of the believer'spersonal union with The Lord, which undersymbol and imagery is the subject of The Songof Songs. And in so doing he has ministeredan unfailing guidance to one of the most commonlyneglected and misunderstood of theSacred Scriptures. For how many have saidin bewilderment at the richness of languageand profusion of figure which both conceal andreveal its meaning, "How can I understandexcept some man should guide me?" It issafe to say that these pages cannot fail to helpand bless all such.

To those who knew him, Mr. Hudson Taylor'slife was in the nature of emphasis upon thevalue of this small volume. For what he here[vi]expounds he also exemplified. If his wordsindicate the possibility and blessedness ofunion with Christ, his whole life declared it inactual experience. He lived as one who was"married to Another, even to Him Who israised from the dead"; and as the outcomeof that union he brought forth "fruit untoGod." What he was has given a meaning andconfirmation to what he has here said, whichcannot be exaggerated. It is inevitable thatthere are those who will read and reject asmystical and unpractical, that which is sodirectly concerned with the intimacies offellowship with the unseen Lord. I would, however, venture to remind such that thewriter of these pages founded the China InlandMission! He translated his vision of theBeloved into life-long strenuous service, andso kept it undimmed through all the years of alife which has had hardly a parallel in theseour days.

This is really the commendation of the followingshort chapters. They proclaim an Evangelwhich has been distilled from experience, andform at least a track through this fencedportion of God's Word, which will lead manyan one who treads it into the joys of Emmanuel'sland.
