The English edition of Dr. Busch’s work which wepublish to-day has been translated from the originalGerman text in the possession of the publishers. Afew passages have, however, been omitted as defamatory,or otherwise unsuitable for publication. Dr.Busch contemplated incorporating bodily in the firstvolume a reproduction of his earlier work: PrinceBismarck and his People during the Franco-GermanWar; but while the many valuable additions whichhe made to it have been preserved, such portions aswould no longer have presented any special interestfor English readers have been considerably abridged.
The work which I now present to the Germanpeople contains a complete[1] account of all the events ofwhich I was a witness during my intercourse of overtwenty years with Prince Bismarck and his entourage.Part of it is not entirely new, as I have embodied in itportions of the book published by me in 1878, underthe title: Prince Bismarck and his People during theFranco-German War. I have, however, restored thenumerous passages which it was then deemed expedientto omit, and I have also dispensed with the manymodifications by which, at that time, certain asperitiesof language had to be toned down. The bulk of thepresent work consists of a detailed narrative of thewhole period of my intercourse with the Prince bothbefore and after the French campaign.
