No man can have reached the position in thepublic eye, can have had such influence in thecouncils of our own government and in thefate of other governments, can have been soconspicuously effective in public service as hasHerbert Hoover, without exciting a wide publicinterest in his personality, his fundamentalattitude toward his great problems and hismethods of solving them. This American, whohas had to live in the whole world and yet hasremained more truly and representativelyAmerican than many of us who have nevercrossed an ocean or national boundary line, isan object of absorbing interest today amongthe people of his native land. He is hardlyless interesting to millions in other lands. Hehas carried the American point of view, theAmerican manner, the American qualities ofheart and mind to the far corners of the earth. He has no less revealed again, as other greatAmericans have done before him, these American[Pg viii]attributes to America itself.
Many questions are being asked about thelife and experiences of this man before he enteredupon his outstanding public service andabout the details of his personal participationin the work of the great wartime private andgovernmental organizations under his direction.
This book is the attempt of an observer, associateand friend to tell, simply and straightforwardly, the personal story of the man andhis work up to the present.
