PREFACE

Some people complain that science is dry. That is, ofcourse, a matter of taste. For my own part, I likemy science and my champagne as dry as I can getthem. But the public thinks otherwise. So I haveventured to sweeten accompanying samples as far aspossible to suit the demand, and trust they will meetwith the approbation of consumers.

Of the specimens here selected for exhibition, mytitle piece originally appeared in the FortnightlyReview: 'Honey Dew' and 'The First Potter' werecontributions to Longman's Magazine: and all therest found friendly shelter between the familiar yellowcovers of the good old Cornhill. My thanks are dueto the proprietors and editors of those variousperiodicals for kind permission to reproduce themhere.
