PREFACE

In a past century the author of a well-digestedand elaborately accurate monograph, thefruit of a life's labour, was well content toentitle it 'Brief Contributions towards aHistory of So-and-So.' Nowadays, aftera few weeks' special cramming, a hastilywritten record of the facts which mostimpressed the writer is labelled often enough 'A History.'Were this book called by the earlier phrase, it would still beoverweighted. Nor did an English idiom exist that wouldprovide the exact synonym for catalogue-raisonn
