In a past century the author of a well-digestedand elaborately accurate monograph, thefruit of a life's labour, was well content toentitle it 'Brief Contributions towards aHistory of So-and-So.' Nowadays, aftera few weeks' special cramming, a hastilywritten record of the facts which mostimpressed the writer is labelled often enough 'A History.'Were this book called by the earlier phrase, it would still beoverweighted.
