INTRODUCTION

Everyone who has had the pleasure of Mr. Poskitt'sacquaintance knows that that estimableYorkshireman is not only the cheeriest of hosts, but the best of companions. Those of us whohave known the Poskitt High Tea (a much moreenjoyable meal than a late dinner) know whatfollows the consumption of Mrs. Poskitt'stender chickens and her home-fed hams. Theparlour fire is stirred into a blaze; the hearth isswept clean; the curtains are drawn; thedecanters, the cigars, and the quaint old leadentobacco-box appear beneath the shaded lamp, and Mr. Poskitt bids his guests to cheer up,to help themselves, and to feel heartilywelcome. And when those guests have theirglasses at their elbows, their cigars and pipesbetween their lips, and their legs stretched incomfort, Mr. Poskitt has his story to tell. Fewmen know the countryside and its people, withtheir joys, their sorrows, their humours betterthan he; few people there can surely be whowould not enjoy hearing him tell of the big andlittle dramas of life which he has watched, witha shrewd and sympathetic eye, during hisseventy years of work and play, of cloud andsunshine. In some of these Nightcap stories(so termed by their hearers because Mr. Poskittinsists on telling them as preparatory to his ownearly retirement, which is never later than teno'clock) he is sometimes humorous and sometimestragic. I trust the re-telling of them maygive some pleasure to folk who must imaginefor themselves the cheery glow of Mr. Poskitt'shearth.
