A HOME-RUN IN INDIANA.

The men of the block-house fort had eaten breakfast by candle-light, foran early start to their work upon the various clearings. The long, roughtable would be reset later for the women and children. They were a bandof settlers in the wilderness, who had arrived from Virginia thepreceding autumn barely in time to build one house for the shelter ofall. Before another summer should be over each family would possess adwelling of its own, and the beginning of a farm great with the promiseof future orchards and fields of grain.

The severity of the winter had departed, March was bringing many days ofbrightness, with songs from the earlier birds of spring. It was now thehour of dawn, and, far to the east, above where rolled the broad Ohio,the sky was rosy with the sun's bright greeting.
