My reasons for writing this book are: First, that MushroomCulture is but little practised in this country comparedto the extent to which it ought to be, consideringthe abundance of the necessary materials in all parts ofthese islands, both in town and country, and the highestimation in which the Mushroom is held. I now referto ordinary Mushroom Culture as practised in our bestprivate gardens. I believe it possible and desirable toextend this, the only phase of the Culture that can becalled popular, in a tenfold degree, and that every placein which a gardener and horses are kept should be abundantlysupplied with Mushrooms throughout the greaterpart of the year.
