In the latter part of this day, July 15th,I set out on my return from the low groundsof Norway. The heat was very powerfulas we began to ascend the mountains.When we reached what had seemed to usfrom below the summit of a hill, we sawjust as lofty an eminence before us, andthis was the case nine or ten successivetimes. I had no idea of such mountainsbefore. The elevation of this hill cannotbe taken by any geometrical instrument,as the summit is not visible, even at somemiles distance. I believe its height mustexceed a Swedish mile, but to climb it was[Pg 2]worse than going two miles any other way.Had we not frequently met with such abundanceof water, we should have been overcomewith fatigue. In this ascent I foundthe little Astragalus (alpinus) with a whiteflower, and the Little Gentian (Gentiananivalis).
Our clothes, which were wet quitethrough with perspiration, in consequenceof the heat we had encountered in the beginningof our journey, were now frozenstiff upon our backs by the cold. We determinedto seek for a Laplander's hut. Inorder to get at one, we were obliged todescend so steep a hill, that, being unableto walk down it, I lay down on my backand slid along, with the rapidity of an arrowfrom a bow. I avoided wit
