EDITOR’S PREFACE.

The Publishing Committee of the AnthropologicalSociety have done me the honour to confide to me thetask of editing Dr. Broca’s valuable little volume. Thisduty I have now fulfilled, and hope that the members ofthe Society and the general public will experience thesame pleasure in reading the translation, as I receivedwhen first I perused the original.

The causes which led the committee to suggest thepublication of the present translation are lucidly expressedby the motto which Dr. Broca placed on his title-page.The public mind is so little acquainted with thereal facts relating to the hybridity of the Races of Man,that its investigation, “non ex vulgi opinione, sed exsano judicio,” is necessary to the efficient progress of ourscience. Such an appeal, however, necessitates that thewhole subject should be again reviewed, and to attainthis object the perusal of a work on similar principles tothat of Dr. Broca becomes the primary requisite for futureresearches. It may be said, that no work which so completelyinvestigates the whole subject of Human Hybridityhas ever been published, and the Council having confirmedthe recommendation of the Publishing Committee,viiiI have endeavoured to perform my allotted task with asmuch prospect of success as could be anticipa
