Do you know what envymeans? I hope you havenever felt it, for it is a verywicked feeling. It is beingsorry when another has anygood thing. Perhaps you willknow better what the word[8]means when you have readmy story; and I hope it willhelp you to keep the feelingaway from your own heart.

Not far from Mr. Lee'shouse, in Riverdale, lived aman by the name of Green.He was the agent of one ofthe factories in the village.Mr. Green had two little girlsand three sons. The boyshave nothing to do with mystory, and for that reason I[9]shall not say a great dealabout them.

Katy, Mr. Green's olderdaughter, was ten years old.She was a pretty good girl,but she did not like to haveothers get good things, whenshe did not have any herself.If any person gave one ofher brothers an apple, or anorange, she seemed to thinkshe ought to have it.

When she was a baby, she[10]used to cry for every thingshe saw, and would give herparents no peace till they gaveit to her. I am sorry to saythey were sometimes veryweak on this point, and gaveher things which she ought notto have had, just to quiet her.
