PREFACE[Pg vii]
Some of the essays in this volume have appearedin recent numbers of various periodicals. Theessays on "Mark Twain" and "Thomas Hardy"were originally printed in the North American Review;those on "Mrs. Ward" and "Rudyard Kipling,"in the Forum; those on "Alfred Ollivant,""Björnstjerne Björnson," and "Novels as a UniversityStudy," in the Independent. The samemagazine contained a portion of the present essayon "Lorna Doone," while the article on "TheTeacher's Attitude toward Contemporary Literature"was written for the Chicago Interior. Myfriend, Mr. Andrew Keogh, Reference Librarianof Yale University, has been kind enough to preparethe List of Publications, thereby increasingmy debt to him for many previous favours.
