THIS book is the third and last of atrilogy of romances. In that trilogyI have endeavoured to show forth thecharacter of the Virginians—men and women.
In “Dorothy South” I tried to show whatthe Virginians were while the old life lasted—“beforethe war.”
In “The Master of Warlock” I endeavouredfaithfully to depict the same people as they wereduring the first half of the Civil War, whentheir valour seemed to promise everything ofresults that they desired. In “Evelyn Byrd” Ihave sought to show the heroism of endurancethat marked the conduct of those people duringthe last half of the war, when disaster staredthem in the face and they unfalteringly confrontedit.
