Your Majesty’s particularInquiries into the State of YourMilitary Hospitals, in everyQuarter of the World, in theTime of the late glorious andsuccessful War; Your Concernfor every Officer and Soldierwho suffered either by Sicknessor by Wounds in the Cause oftheir King and Country; andYour Solicitude to procure themevery possible Assistance and Relief,cannot fail to excite thehighest Admiration of YourMajesty’s Goodness in the[v]Breast of every Subject, and thewarmest Gratitude in the Heartof every Soldier.

The Knowledge of these Circumstancesinduced me to flattermyself, that a Work of thisKind would be agreeable to YourMajesty; and should this Attempttowards pointing out theMeans of alleviating those Miseries,which necessarily attenda Military Life in the Time ofService, be acceptable, I shallobtain the utmost of my Wishes;[vi]it being the greatest Ambitionof my Heart ever so to act as tomerit Your Majesty’s Approbation,and to subscribe myself,
