The object of this memoir is to give some information as to the earlywork of Randolph Caldecott, an artist who is known to the world chieflyby his Picture Books.
The extracts from letters have a personal charm apart from any literarymerit. The majority of the letters, and the sketches which accompaniedthem, were sent to the author's family; others have[Pg viii] been kindly lentfor this memoir by Mr. William Clough, Mr. Locker-Lampson, Mr.Whittenbury, and other friends. Acknowledgments are also due to thepublishers who have lent engravings.
At the desire of Mr. Caldecott's representatives,—to whom the authoris indebted for extracts from diaries and other material—theconsideration of his later work is reserved for a future time.
Although the text of this book is little more than a setting for theillustrations, it is hoped that the material collected may be foundinteresting.
