Moses

MOSES VIEWING CANAAN.

When the children of Israelwere journeying from Egyptto the land of Canaan, Mosesdisobeyed one command ofthe Lord. For this act, Godtold him he should not enter[Pg 3]the Land of Promise. Butas Moses repented of his sin,God said he should be permittedto see the land.

So, when they arrived nearCanaan, God said to Moses,Go to mount Nebo, to the topof Pisgah, and I will shewthee the land which I havepromised to the children ofIsrael; and after that thoushalt die.

Then Moses went to thetop of the mount, where hecould see the land which thechildren of Israel were toinherit. And God then saidto Moses, This is the landwhich I promised to Abraham,to Isaac, and to Jacob;I have caused thee to see it,but thou shalt not go into it.

Samson

SAMSON CARRYING AWAY THE
GATES OF GAZA.

Samson was one of the judgesof Israel, after the death ofMoses. He was the strongestman that ever lived. Inhis time the Philistines wereat war with the Israelites.[Pg 5]These Philistines were a nationof heathen, who worshippedidols instead of thegreat God who made us all.Samson in one battle killed athousand of them with thejaw-bone of an ass. Afterthis, they found out one nightthat he was in their walledcity, called Gaza, and so theyfastened the great gates of thecity, thinking they could inthis way keep him there tillmorning, and then kill him.

But Samson arose at midnightand took the two greatgates of the city, with thebar and the gate posts, andcarried them to the top of ahigh hill, a great way off.In this way he escaped outof the hands of his enemies.
