A LITTLE FLEET
The following account of the Fleet,and of the various histories of thevoyages of the vessels which composeit, has been written out by meat the request of the owners. Ihave also made for them thedrawings and the chart which illustratethe account.
The owners of this small merchantfleet had nowhere else handyto float their vessels in than thesmall and winding Gara river anda very small pond; the vesselswhen upon the river drove alongwith the stream, their sails, whenthey had any, only being of use toget them out of bad places, exceptoccasionally when the current ranslowly; then, with a fair wind, the“Pasear” and the “Monte,” atany rate, would walk along at afine pace.
Long, light sticks were carried tosteer the ships round dangerouscorners, and through narrow anddifficult channels like the TwoSnags; and when I say she steeredthis way, or her skipper took such[Pg 8]a course, you will understand it isjust put that way because it soundsbetter.
The two longest voyages werethose of the “Theodore” and the“Pasear,” both of which vesselstravelled about a mile along theriver. The owners think that anyother little boys who live near astream sufficiently deep to floatships drawing so little water mightlike to follow their example andbuild a fleet, therefore I am to tellyou how each vessel was built, aswell as the story of its voyage.
The chart shows the winding riverdown which the clippers voyaged,and on it are marked the varioussnags, rapids, and other dangers.
