SINCE the activity of commerce, and thenecessity of understanding its relations, induced the maritimepowers of Europe to attempt fresh discoveries, all their effortshave been directed towards the new world. When the most fertileparts of that continent, and its still more productive isles, werediscovered and explored, the enterprising spirit of navigatorscarried them even to the south pole; in short, the most distant andhazardous expeditions were undertaken, and immense sums weredisbursed to find out a few corners of the earth which wereuninhabited.
