This e-text is based on the 1869(second) edition of the Alliterative Poems. A few apparentmisprints were checked against the 1864 edition, but the texts as awhole were not closely compared.
The text includes characters that will only display in UTF-8(Unicode)text readers, primarily Ȝ ȝ (yogh). There are also a few Greek words inthe Index, and a handful of letters with overline or macron, such as ī.If these characters do not display properly, or if the quotation marksin this paragraph appear as garbage, you may have an incompatiblebrowser or unavailable fonts. First, make sure that your browser’s“character set” or “file encoding” is set to Unicode (UTF-8). You mayalso need to change the default font.

Typographical errors are shown with mouse-hover popups. Quotation-markerrors—especially orphaned open quotes—are similarly marked. In some cases itmay be possible to guess where the missing quotation mark belongs, butit seemed safer to leave the text as printed. No quotation marksdisappeared between the 1864 and 1869 editions.
